The start of something new at Healesville

Over 100 women flocked to the picturesque Healesville on Sunday, for champagne on arrival, high tea and to be a part of the inaugural Celebrating Women On Track event.

Manager Cynthia O’Brien was the driving force behind the day, which was organised to celebrate females throughout the industry, from owners to breeders and administrators, stewards, race callers, ear branders, veterinarians, track staff and of course trainers.

“There are approximately 550 registered lady trainers in Victoria, all with pivotal roles within the greyhound industry. We were very fortunate to have seven races programmed just to showcase our ladies and I hope that next year we will have even more,” Healesville Manager Cynthia O’Brien explained.

After an emotion filled speech, Cynthia presented The Meadows Club Manager Marg Long, with the Recognition of Service Award, on-behalf of Healesville.

“Having been a very successful owner, trainer and breeder, Marg also has a long involvement in various administrative positions within the sport and her dedication to serving the industry on numerous committees, boards and panels, as well as helping other participants, and always considering the best outcomes for greyhounds,” Cynthia explained of Healesville’s decision to present, life-long friend Marg Long with the award.

A beautiful high tea and a gift bag full of goodies weren’t the only attraction for guests on the day, Australia’s only female race caller Victoria Shaw, joined Healesville local caller and trainer James Van De Maat in calling the 12 race card.
Victoria managed to tip a $14.10 winner in her first call up the straight in Superior Bobby.
